A young Canastotan and his young wife moved to Oneida to establish a funeral service business. C. Fred Campbell and Hattie Campbell took funeral service out of the storefront era and opened Oneida’s first funeral home in a residential setting. They initiated the superlative standards of service and the traditions of personalized concern that continue at Campbell-Dean today.

Marion G. Dean Jr., a Canastota High School graduate and then a young New York State trooper, had just come back from WWII’s Pacific Theatre. He attended Simmons Institute of Funeral Service on his G.I. Bill, then joined Fred Campbell in the funeral service business. Known for his comforting wit and easy manner, Marion brought additional commitment, ambition and vision to the firm, implementing many professional innovations years before they were state-required.

Marion and his wife, Lorena Olcott Dean, relocated the business to a two-story Italiante-style home (built in 1850) on Main Street in Oneida. They renovated, enlarged and redecorated the facility for utmost family comfort, and established the firm as a capable, caring provider of dignified and professional funeral services. These traditions still characterize Campbell-Dean today.

Jim Dean, Marion and Lorena’s son, joined the business, and is currently the third-generation owner and operator.

The funeral home established a second location to serve residents in the Canastota community, when Jim Dean purchased, enlarged, and redecorated a historic residence on Peterboro Street in the village. This was the location of the former Schepp-Cretaro  Funeral Home.

Campbell-Dean Funeral Home was recognized in professional circles for its dedicated service and traditions of caring, personalized concern as well as community service. The firm was awarded the National Funeral Directors Association Eagle Award for the Pursuit of Excellence. This award distinguishes Campbell-Dean as one of the only funeral homes in Central New York, and in very small percentage of firms nationally, to have earned that citation.

Campbell-Dean’s Canastota location was honored by the Canastota Chamber of Commerce as the business recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for excellence within the community.

Campbell-Dean’s Oneida location was honored by the Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce as its Annual Business At Its Best Award winner.

Since 1905, serving the families of Central New York with dedicated service, concern and professionalism.
